Heritage bodies and building preservation organizations

The National Amenity Societies
The amenity societies are a group of voluntary societies dedicated to the preservation of historic buildings and the promotion of the appreciation of those buildings and the cultures that created them. In recognition of their standing and expertise, the government directed in The Town and Country Planning Act (1968) that all applications for listed building consent in England and Wales that would entail the partial or complete demolition of a listed building be notified to the societies to give them an opportunity to comment on the proposals.
The Council for British Archaeology
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB)
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) has long promoted the importance of routine maintenance and sponsors National Maintenance Week every November. It has an extensive list of publications relating to building preservation and operates a Technical Advice Line (020 7456 0916) on weekdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Advice line staff can answer questions and give advice about specific maintenance or repair problems, and may also be able to suggest suitable contractors in or near your area.
